Alphington Spur route rezoning

The land identified by the state government as the route of a future strategic cycling corridor through Alphington is being rezoned for development.

Planning documents from Vic Track, the owner of the land, appear to indicate the provision of bike infrastructure but, perplexingly, seem oblivious of plans for a major bike route through the site.

The land, commonly known as the Alphington Spur, was once the route of a section of the outer circle rail corridor, long abandoned for rail, and since utilised in sections for bike routes.

This section has long been regarded as the home of a vital bike link between Fairfield Station and Heidlelberg Road, and via the Chandler Highway path to the Main Yarra Trail.

This can still be assured as the corridor is wide enough for development and active transport links, if planned properly.

The planning documents say the land will be used for housing and a new fire station.

The draft planning scheme amendment is now open for public comment here.
