Latest Park and Ride planned for Rokeby

The Tasmanian Government’s latest Park and Ride is being planned for Rokeby with storage for 37 bikes, but still no security system in place.

Park and Rides provide parking for cars, motorbikes and bicycles at bus stops to make it easier for people who live further out of the city to catch public transport.

The Rokeby site at the corner of Rokeby Road and Tollard Drive is the fifth built or planned in greater Hobart.

The Huntingfield and Firthside sites have been opened for a few years, the Midway Point site is about to open and construction on the Claremont site begins soon.

While bicycle parking cages have been included in all of the sites, the government is yet to implement a security system for them.

The cages are modelled on the Parkiteer system at Melbourne train stations where riders access the cages via an app or swipe card and then lock the bikes inside for two-layers of security.

The Tasmanian cages don’t have that extra level of security that gives riders the peace of mind their bike may be there when they return after a day at work or school.

The missing security access needs to be fixed if Park and Rides are going to provide a genuine option for bike riders. The government is undertaking a secure bike parking trial soon that will hopefully provide a solution for the Park and Ride cages.

Comments on Rokeby site

The initial site for the Rokeby Park and Ride was rejected after consultation, with the new site on the other side of Rokeby Road.

The proposed Park and Ride sits on the shared path along Rokeby Road that connects to Clarence Street and on to the Foreshore Trail via a shortcut through Mortyn Place Park.

It’s one of the best sited Park and Rides for bicycle access, with a shared path along Pass Road and the Grange West slip road providing other comfortable riding routes from residential pockets.

Consultation on the Rokeby design is open for comment until 10 November via https://www.transport.tas.gov.au/roadworks/current_projects/south_road_projects/rokeby-park-and-ride
