Bundaberg secures road safety funding

Bundaberg Regional Council has secured full funding for six high-priority projects under the federal government's 2025–26 Black Spot Program – a coup for road safety in the region.

The projects aim to tackle notorious crash sites and improve safety for all road users, including bike riders and pedestrians.

More than $4 million has been allocated to the six projects, which are:

  • Maynard StreetMaryborough Street, Walkervale ($158,500): installation of speed reduction devices on each approach to the roundabout.
  • Maryborough StreetElectra Street, Bundaberg ($340,000): traffic signal upgrade to improve safety for pedestrians.
  • Maynard StreetKensington and Miller Streets, Norville ($376,000): Kensington Street intersection converted to left-in only; channelised right-turn lane and raised safety platform at Miller Street.
  • Targo StreetGeorge Street, Bundaberg Central ($1,334,500): installation of raised pedestrian crossings on all legs, upgraded lighting, path widening and clearing of vegetation.
  • Maryborough StreetGeorge Street, Bundaberg Central ($802,500): traffic signal upgrade to improve safety for pedestrians; extension of footpath on western side of Maryborough Street.
  • Branyan StreetCrofton Street, Norville ($990,500): reconfigure intersection into a single-lane roundabout with raised pedestrian crossings and curb extensions, improving sightlines and pedestrian safety.

The Black Spot Program aims to help prevent serious injuries and deaths on roads.

Projects under the scheme target dangerous locations where crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring, often by improving traffic signals and installing roundabouts.

Bundaberg Mayor Helen Blackburn said the funding commitment from the Black Spot Program was vital to the region's ongoing road safety efforts.

"These upgrades are targeted, data-driven responses to areas with a history of crashes," she said.

"The improvements funded under the 2025–26 program will make some of our most problematic intersections significantly safer for all road users.

"Securing this funding means council can deliver these important safety improvements without placing additional strain on our budget – and that's a win for our community."
