Tram upgrade to close Bourke and Spencer

There will be considerable disruption to traffic in the city centre next month when the intersection of Bourke and Spencer streets is closed for 10 days for tram track replacement.

Early works will be underway during weekday nights towards the end of January as the site area is established and underground services identified.

The intersection will be open during this time with trams running and road traffic under management.

There will be some parking closures during this time. Footpaths will be open with temporary detours. Local businesses will remain open.

Activities will be underway from 10pm to 5am, Sunday 25 January to Monday 16 February 2026 (Sunday to Thursday nights only).

Major works will be underway 24 hours a day from 1am Monday 16 February to 5am Thursday 26 February 2026.

During this time the intersection will be closed, with Bourke Street closed between King Street and Spencer Street, and Spencer Street closed between Little Collins and Little Bourke streets.

In this period crews will reconstruct tracks and replace poles and wiring.

There will be further information on impacts on trams services and other issues closer to the major works.
