With construction of the massive new intersection at Point Cook Road, Altona Meadows, at an advanced stage, planning is now underway on the important next phase of the project — the strategic cycling corridor along Central Avenue.
A new off-road shared path is to be constructed between Lunn Court and Skehan Boulevard, partly within the Bruce Comben Reserve and partly on the south side of the arterial.
The bike link is being delivered as part of an upgrade that includes two extra road lanes, traffic lights at the intersection of Central Avenue, Skehan Boulevard and Donald Street South, and a signalised pedestrian crossing between Ascot Street South and Balmoral Street South.
Central Avenue is part of a future Strategic Cycling Corridor that links to Altona along Queens Street, then meanders along Skeleton Creek before taking local roads through to Sneydes Road into Werribee.
It will provide important connections to other bike routes through Altona and Point Cook in a region that has some good bike links, but otherwise is barren of decent bike infrastructure.
The upgrade is in the pre-construction phase with designs being refined while environmental, utilities, site investigations and flood modelling work is undertaken.
Once planning approvals are obtained the project will enter the procurement phase to appoint a construction partner to deliver the upgrade.
Construction timing will be known once pre-construction has further progressed.
Riders may notice some temporary road closures in the coming months as investigation are underway.
