Fuel prices are skyrocketing, prompting talk about switching car journeys to a bicycle. Some people can’t easily do this, but if you can, it could save you thousands each year.
According to 2025 data from the Australian Automobile Association, the national average annual cost of owning a car is $23,389 — and that’s before the recent fuel price increases.
Bike commuters are shelling out far less, even taking into consideration servicing and occasional repairs.
Swapping your car for a bike or e-bike not only cuts fuel spend, but also eliminates costs associated with licensing, registration, insurance and loan repayments.
Plus, getting around by bike is better for your health and better for the environment.
