Trail Tested: The AMFLOW e-MTB

Better known for their cameras, video stabilisers and drones, it came as quite a surprise to hear that one of the world’s leading technology brands was diversifying into bikes.

Yes, DJI, the company behind waterproof action cameras, Mavic and the Mini series of drones, is now firmly established in the e-bike world.

Using their Avinox motors, DJI powers an ever-increasing range of bikes. At least 12 long-established mountain bike brands use the lightweight motors, along with several up-and-coming gravel bike manufacturers.

Considering the R&D, tech, and innovations Avinox is adding to its drive systems – including security, integration with health apps, and phone-based navigation – it’s not surprising that it is quickly gaining a firm foothold in the market.

This review focuses on the e-MTB side of things, particularly ‘Amflow’ – a brand described as ‘incubated by DJI, but not a subsidiary of the company’.

Breaking into a long-established e-MTB sector is no easy feat; imagine the chances of an action camera or drone start-up taking on DJI with a new product and being competitive. But that’s exactly what Amflow have done with their top model, the 2025 model PL carbon, which Bicycle Network’s Ride On member magazine recently reviewed.

 

The DJI top-tube touch screen display offers all manner of data, including speed, power, range, elevation and more. 

A Versatile All-Rounder

At the heart of the Amflow is DJI’s e-MTB drive system, a powerful unit (pictured above) known as the Avinox M1. The main point of difference with this, over virtually every e-bike motor ever produced, is its weight and, particularly, its power-to-weight ratio.

At 2.58kg this pocket-sized powerhouse generates 105Nm of torque. In addition to this, the Avinox can push out up to 850W of power.

To the bike itself, we’ve found it to be a truly versatile machine suitable for riders of varying levels of experience.

The 19.2kg Amflow can’t be pigeonholed into a particular MTB genre; it doesn’t truly slot into the cross-country, trail or downhill categories.

Instead, it feels like a genuine all-rounder – a bike capable of handling a range of situations, from urban commuting to singletrack to country roads. Fully charged, it’s raring to go and ready for wherever you want to point it.

Tested with aggressive 2.5-inch Maxxis tyres, we initially found these to be overkill for the more urban environments and light trails. But this all changed during the next outing to a series of rugged fire trails off West Head Road in Ku-Ring-Gai National Park north of Sydney.

 

The Bottom Line(s)

Power-wise, the pedal-assist function offers a significant performance boost without feeling unnatural or overpowering. Amflow say a torque sensor is fitted to the system to help deliver a smooth and responsive ride.

To all-important stopping power, and the oversized Magura hydraulic discs felt solid and secure on road and trail and in a variety of conditions of our 3-week test period.

Battery life is key with e-bikes. We found it respectable but not necessarily extraordinary. The expected range varies quite dramatically as you toggle between power modes, with around 40 to 50km on Turbo through to around 110km on Eco. The company have tested the bike to a maximum range of 157km using the Eco setting and averaging 21k p/h. We found a balanced mix of Eco, Trail and occasional Turbo mode gave around 75 to 80km of range.

Overall, it is a hugely impressive bike, especially as a debut offering from a camera and drone company. It delivers a surprisingly high level of capability, comfort and innovation. Most of all, it looks as good as it performs, its finish and attention to detail are next-level, and the component quality is first-class.

The bottom line will always be price, and this top-of-range dream e-MTB offering is $13,700. That’s a lot of money for a bike, but against its competition, the Amflow offers a lot of bikes for the money.
