Thank You for a Record-Breaking Response

To all our members and friends — thank you.

There were over 1,500 submissions to the City of Melbourne’s draft budget.

An overwhelming 94% were about bike lanes, and 94% of those supported more investment.

It was a massive show of public support for protected bike infrastructure.

Bicycle Network CEO, Alison McCormack provides a deep dive into the wonky numbers in the draft City of Melbourne 2025 budget here https://bicyclenetwork.com.au/newsroom/2025/06/19/melbourne-demands-better-its-time-for-council-to-fund-bike-lanes-properly/

What Happened on 17 June

At the Council meeting on Tuesday 17 June, an unprecedented 180 people registered to speak.

The meeting continued until midnight. We heard emotional, powerful stories:

  •  Older residents calling for safer streets
  • Families riding with kids
  • Young people commuting to uni or work
  •  People recovering from bike crashes
  • Everyday people who just want to feel safe on two wheels

Councillors listened. They asked questions. But not everyone got the chance to speak.

That’s why we’re urging everyone  especially those who couldn’t stay up late or haven’t yet had their say to email the councillors directly.

What happened next?

The City of Melbourne is reviewed the decision on 30 June.

The 2025 budget and council plan formally adopted by councillors after this folded $6 million back into the program, up to a total of $15 million over the next four years.

We are calling for Council to honour its commitment to spend at least $5 million per year on bike lane infrastructure the level previously promised.

Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack said the City of Melbourne is walking back on its commitment to safe, sustainable transport by slashing $3 million from its promised investment in bike lanes.

“These cuts threaten Melbourne’s ability to meet its 2030 sustainability targets and make it harder for people to choose active, low-impact transport.

Make a submission and get these cuts reversed.”

“Bike lanes aren’t a luxury, they’re a necessity for thousands of city workers everyday.

“We need riders to help us hold decision-makers accountable and keep Melbourne moving, safely, sustainably and for everyone.
