United Energy Around the Bay
Each year hundreds of amazing people from all walks of life donate their time and energy to help make United Energy Around the Bay the best day on the bike all year.
They play a huge role in shaping an iconic Melbourne event.
We chatted to some of our regular volunteers and put together a list of their top five reasons for getting involved.
1. Being a part of community
Lots of our volunteers are bike riders themselves, who love to help throw a party for the wider bike riding community.
But you don’t have to be a bikey to get involved. Many of our volunteers don’t ride bikes at all, but want to be involved in an iconic event that promotes healthy habits and helps fundraising for a good cause.
Bicycle Network even give donations to community groups who volunteer together.

2. Share skills and learn new ones

Luckily for us, there are heaps of people willing to share their skills and experiences as part of our team! Whether you’re a logistics expert, marketing guru, or a keen musician, there’s an opportunity to showcase any and all skill sets at United Energy Around the Bay.
And with 27 years running one of Australia’s biggest bike rides, there’s also plenty of opportunity to learn some new skills from the dynamic team that help put United Energy Around the Bay together each year.

3. Support Maddie Riewoldt's Vision
United Energy Around the Bay is proud to support our official charity partner, Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision.
Founded in honour of Maddie Riewoldt, who was just 26 years old when she tragically died from a Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome, Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision funds vital research that accelerates diagnosis and treatments, while supporting patients and their families with counselling, education and resources.
Every 3 days an Australian is diagnosed with a Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome. Distressingly, most are children and young adults, and 50% will not survive. Thousands more are living with complex medical issues and ongoing risks to their health.
By fundraising for Maddie’s Vision you’re helping fund research that will result in faster diagnosis, better treatments, tailored support and improved outcomes for patients and families impacted by Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes.

4. Spend the day with new and old friends

At its core, United Energy Around the Bay is a celebration, and while there is a lot of work that goes in behind the scenes to keep the party rolling, the team never loses sight of the mission to have fun.
Our volunteers work as hard as anyone, and have more fun than everyone else doing so! And that’s what keeps them coming back each year – to spend the day with new and old friends, working toward a common goal.
At the end of the day, there’s nothing quite as satisfying as being part of a team that pulled off a great party.
5. Cheer on a friend or family member
Of course, every year we have plenty of friends and family of riders who would love to get involved behind the scenes to show their support to a loved one who’s out on the bike.
And it doesn’t matter if it’s been 20 or 200 kilometres in the saddle, there’s nothing better than seeing your loved ones at one of the 13 rest areas out on the route, or cheering at the finish line.
