Using AI to study bike movements in Canberra

Bicycle Network has partnered with the ACT Government to undertake a week-long study for a new separated bike lane in central Canberra.

The lane, installed on Bowen Drive in Barton, is encouraging riders to switch from using the road or shared path.

Before the installation, Bicycle Network’s Artificial Intelligence Road Surveys (AIRS) were used to capture footage of users and gain insights into the user volumes and trace paths, conflicts and more.

Surveys conducted in March captured a total of 5334 riders using the shared path and road. Bicycle Network identified and studied 19 interactions between pedestrians and riders on the shared path. Of these interactions, none were classified as conflicts or near-misses.

A small study was also completed to understand the demographics of riders using the shared path, surveying age, gender and user type.

The data and report will prove important as the ACT Government aims to show the success of the separated bike infrastructure in improving the safety for both pedestrians and bike riders.

The study will be repeated, after the construction in October, to determine the reduction of conflicts between riders and pedestrians and to understand the changes in volume of riders and pedestrians.
