Bikeway pops up in Canberra

A two-way protected bike lane has opened in Canberra and marks a key milestone along an important route servicing riders headed for the CBD.

The pop-up bike lane runs adjacent to Lake Burley on Bowen Drive in Kingston and connects the Kings Avenue Bridge to Bowen Park. It is the first of the Kingston cycleway's two stages.

This cycleway is part of a wider program of upgrades and investment in the City to Queanbeyan bike route, which will improve the journey for riders travelling in Canberra’s southeast.

Work on the first stage kicked off in April and used quick-build infrastructure consisting of a recycled rubber kerb fixed to the ground to separate riders from traffic.

The cycleway runs beside a previously an overcrowded shared path, which will now be signed exclusively for pedestrians. The cycleway has also been constructed to connect with off-road bike lanes at either end.

Stage two of the Kingston Cycleway will link Bowen Park with Cunningham Street south. This will be a mix of shared and separated bike facilities with new pedestrian crossings and is under design.
