Hobart budgets for cycling projects

The City of Hobart on Monday passed its annual plan for next year, with a handful of cycling projects making the cut.

The local area mobility plans for the northern suburbs, Mount Nelson, West Hobart and Battery Point will continue to be rolled out.

The Augusta Road consultation finished recently to guide the council on developing designs in the coming year for projects in the northern suburbs plan, such as a separated cycleway.

Primary school active travel plans have been a focus for the council and in the coming year a plan for Hobart High School could improve access to the cycleway from Main Road for all of us.

A “vision” for Elizabeth Street will be released in the coming year, which may improve conditions for confident riders. And a neighbourhood plan for Sandy Bay and Mount Nelson is also due for release – the discussion paper proposed a cycleway along Sandy Bay Road.

Budgeted funding for specific projects includes:

  • $25,000 for lighting along the Hobart Rivulet
  • $369,000 for a shared path along Queens Walk
  • $125,000 for stage 2 of the Pipeline Track resurfacing
  • $236,000 for shared path connection on Burnett Street
School travel plans ticked

The same meeting that passed the annual plan also passed school access travel plans for Mount Nelson, Albuera Street and Lenah Valley primary schools.

The plans seek to increase the numbers of children walking and riding to school to help them get the 60 minutes of physical activity they need daily for good health, which is also the goal of Bicycle Network’s Ride2School program.

Shared footpaths, cycle lanes, safer crossings and lower speeds were recommended across the local area mobility plans relevant to each school.

Schools have committed to activities such as promotion of walking and cycling routes, reducing traffic outside schools, how-to-ride sessions and walking/cycling buses.
