The City of Hobart’s pioneering E-bike Library has celebrated its first birthday, with close to 10,000 km travelled by the bikes over the past year.
More than 140 people borrowed a bike and waiting lists remain strong for the 12 e-bikes on offer. Loans last for two weeks and are free, except for a bond that is repaid when the bike is returned.
Bicycle Network was involved in setting up the library and continues to provide free rider insurance to cover the two-week loan period.
The library helps people to take a bike home and work out whether an e-bike will fit their lifestyle before they take the plunge and buy their own.
This is especially true for people contemplating buying a cargo e-bike, which are significantly dearer than standard e-bikes.
Jon Leighton and his partner borrowed a cargo e-bike then decided to buy one of their own.
“During a two-week free hire, the bike allowed us to whizz into town for work without sitting in traffic or paying for parking, despite the ridiculous September winds and steep Hobart hills.
“Picking up groceries on the way home was easy, too.
“This September we're expecting our first child, so we've decided to buy our own cargo bike to help with school runs once they get a bit bigger!"
Hobart City Councillor and chair of the council’s Transport Committee, Ryan Posselt, said the library was about giving people the confidence to try something new.
“After one year into the program, we’re seeing that once people experience the benefits of e-bikes, many go on to make the switch.
“It’s great to see the impact flowing through to local businesses and helping more Hobartians consider low-emissions transport.”
The E-bike Library waiting list has also been cleaned of duplicates and bookings that are no longer wanted so it’s a great time to book an e-bike if you are a Hobart resident.
