The new bike corridor along Atkinson Street in Oakleigh, a key link between the Djerring and Scotchmans Creek trails, has opened.
The facility is a two-way off-road path along the east side of the street between Dandenong Road and Oxford Street.
While the cycleway is open, there are some final works to soon be completed:
- Street lighting upgrade. Including three new lighting poles along Hanover Street.
- Landscaping: new plantings in the extended kerb areas on the east side of Atkinson Street at key side‑street intersections.
- Signalised intersection. Construction of the cycleway through the Atkinson Street, Hanover Street and Atherton Road traffic light intersections will be completed in 2026. Until then, signage will remind cyclists to share the path with pedestrians.
The extension of the cycleway north of Dandenong Road to connect to the Scotchmans Creek Trail will be considered as part of a future Monash Council budget.
The new route should help riders get to the Oakleigh shopping district, which has vast amounts of car parking and car-choked streets.
The route is highly visible with green markings to indicate exclusive bike areas, while yellow markings show where cyclists and pedestrians share the path.
Several new priority crossings have also been installed. These are marked with a Give Way sign to indicate to drivers to give way to cyclists and pedestrians.
Mayor of Monash City, Stuart James, talks about the project in this You Tube clip.
