Riders along the Koonung Creek Trail can now experience the soaring new Estelle Street Bridge over the Eastern Freeway.
Work on the 40-metre-high structure has now been completed, while work on the freeway below and on the trail approaches to the bridge continues.
The bridge was delivered as part of the North East Link Project which is widening the freeway as well adding busways and a new shared trail between the Merri Creek and Bourke Road.
The new 4-metre-wide structure, twice the width of the one it replaced, gives riders along the trail and local communities improved connections to Koonung Creek Reserve in Balwyn North and the new Bulleen Park and Ride facility.
The cable-stayed bridge is 133 metres long to provide space underneath for the freeway upgrades.
The new bridge was installed over a weekend of around-the-clock works before the old structure was demolished in November.
Surrounding noise wall installation, landscape works and secondary ramp construction will be completed in areas adjacent to the new bridge across 2026.
The Estelle Street Bridge is one of several new and upgraded crossings set to provide wider, safer connections for walkers and riders as part of the Eastern Freeway upgrades.
You can see it now. Although the Koonung Creek Trail is currently detoured in places, access through the precinct is still good.
