An on-road section of the Upfield Trail could be converted into a shared zone in a proposal from the City of Merri-bek.
Merri-bek would incorporate a shared zone in a landscaping upgrade to Batman Avenue, Coburg North, one of the few sections of the Upfield Trail where riders and walkers can encounter motor vehicles.
By designating the street as a shared zone pedestrians would have right of way, as they do on a shared-use trail, but in this case cars would also be required to give way to people on foot.
A concept plan has been released for feedback. You can have your say on the proposal: https://conversations.merri-bek.vic.gov.au/batman-shared-zones
The ideas include:
- Making the street one way to through traffic while permitting two-way access to local traffic
- Reducing conflicts at side-street intersections
Narrowing street width - Installation of speed cushions to slow traffic
New road markings - Improved side-street crossing points for pedestrians.
The consultation will remain open through May and June, with detailed design in July and construction in mid-2025.
