Orange in regional New South Wales is in line for a nice new stretch of bike path, one that will expand the off-road network and improve access to schools, playgrounds and sports facilities.
The new three-metre-wide shared path will be constructed on the eastern edge of Ploughmans Lane, west of the city centre.
While only 500 metes long, it will act as an extension of an existing shared path that follows Ploughmans Creek and weaves through a residential area to the north.
It will also run alongside Riawinna Oval and connect with Coronation Drive at the other end.
“Orange already has a fantastic network of shared paths that connect key locations around the city,” says Orange City Council’s infrastructure committee chair, Cr Jack Evans.
The paths are designed to be used by both pedestrians and cyclists. They enable young children or experienced cyclists travel around our city safely away from busy car traffic.”
The $300,000 path is being funded through the NSW Government’s Get Active program, and will include rest-area seating, lighting and signage.
“A key benefit will be a reduction in car travel to local area destinations,” reads the NSW Government document.
The Get Active program has also awarded a grant for construction of a new 1km long footpath on Matthews Avenue, north of the Orange CBD.
“There is a strong movement towards active transport corridors in our regional communities and it’s great to be part of a government which is funding the development and delivery of infrastructure to envisage this,” NSW Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison.
