Work on the much-anticipated $38.9 million Sydney Harbour Bridge ramp upgrade has begun.
When completed, the bike lane will link the country's most famous bridge to the bike network in Milsons Point.
The new 170m-long and 3m-wide wide ramp will replace (and spare bike riders) the infamous 55 stairs, offering children, people with prams or disabilities, older adults, and riders of all kinds, a gently sloping access point.
The new ramp will connect riders from the bridge to the bike network in Milsons Point. From Bradfield Park, riders will be able to join a new 150m-long and 2.5-metre-wide two-way dedicated bike path and shared zones in Milsons Point.
Bicycle Network and local advocates have campaigned for almost 40 years for the steps to be replaced by a ramp to enhance the experience for 2000 riders who use the route daily.
The ramp’s pavement will form an Aboriginal artwork design, developed by Aboriginal artists Maddison Gibbs and Jason Wing, drawing on the imagery and themes of Gadigal and Cammeraygal land and waters.
Improvements will also be made in Bradfield Park and include new footpaths and a pedestrian crossing on Alfred Street South.
Updated images of the final designs will be released in the next couple of weeks. Work is expected to be completed by 2026.
