Suburban Rail Loop moves on plans for Highett bike connection

Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) has begun planning for bike infrastructure that will deliver multiple new connections in and around the Highett, Cheltenham and Southland area.

The Sir William Fry Reserve will be substantially altered as the new SRL Cheltenham Station emerges on part of the site, triggering a major redesign and upgrade of the parklands.

As part of the works, the strategic cycling corridor along the Frankston Line will be constructed through the reserve from Highett to Bay Road.

Importantly, these works will be completed before major construction of the new SRL station at Cheltenham begins in 2028.

The SRL has begun preliminary public consultation on the redevelopment of the Reserve and the former Highett Gasworks site.

Feedback will be used to inform a Public Open Space Management Plan, improvements to the reserve and designs for the new permanent open space, skate park and basketball court.

A summary report of feedback and how it has been considered in the design will be provided on the SRL website in late 2025.

The SRL has said it would establish a priority walking and cycling network to fill gaps between neighbourhoods, open spaces and key destinations including the new SRL station, Southland Shopping Centre, Highett Neighbourhood Activity Centre and the Bayside Business District.

It will also improve permeability through the provision of more frequent, high-quality and safe crossing points over Nepean Highway and along Bay Road.

Community engagement is open until 2 September 2025.
