Where there are bikes there is Hope Street

There are good prospects for bike riders who favour Hope Street in Brunswick and Brunswick West for their east–west route through the suburb following the release of new concept design for improvements to the street.

Hope Street is lodged between busy Albion and Victoria streets, and does not have the capacity for moving large volumes of motor traffic.

Its setting encourages more sedate journeys suited to the neighbourhood along the street, making it popular with riders and families on foot.

However, it can be a notorious rat run as drivers who have the Waze app welded to their dashboard race along it to shave milliseconds off the school drop-off.

The City of Merri-bek now has a set of new concepts for modifying the street and calming the motoring beast and is seeking feedback.
The street is long and varied, and the council has chosen a mix of treatments to use, depending on local context.

The critical one is a 30kn/h speed limit, as reduced speeds open up options for other measures that otherwise would not be possible.
