Key route takes shape through North Sydney

Riders are enjoying a new stretch of separated cycleway toward Cammeray, which is set to become a key route through northern Sydney.

This first stage of the West Street cycleway opened last month and includes a 100 metre, two-way bike lane between Ridge Street and the Pacific Highway in North Sydney.

The development also includes a pedestrian and rider crossing, a low-speed shared path, kerb realignment and trees.

“The project will make it easier for people to walk and cycle, giving everyone the option to leave the car at home and enjoy the fresh air as they wander through this beautiful part of Sydney," says NSW Transport Minister Jo Haylen.

The West Street Cycleway was identified as a priority route in the 2014 North Sydney Integrated Cycling Strategy and is considered a key active travel project to connect Cammeray to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The second, longer stage of the cycleway is in development and will extend the cycleway to the north, connecting Ridge Street and Amhurst Street.

"Cyclists collectively make more than 400 trips along West Street each week day, highlighting how much demand there was for a dedicated cycleway along this road," says North Sydney Mayor Zoë Baker.

"The separated cycleway will build on existing demand as it will attract cyclists of all ages who currently do not feel confident to cycle on the road."
