38 bike models skewered by recall

Product Safety Australia has recalled a massive 38 bike models including bikes made by Avanti, Malvern Star, Raleigh and Diamond Back.

Each of the bikes fails to comply with the mandatory standard for the attachment of the front wheel with a quick-release skewer.

Product Safety Australia advises that the front wheels may become loose and fall out if the quick-release skewer is not installed and tightened correctly.

Riders on the models are at risk of crash and serious injury if the front wheel comes loose or falls out while the bicycle is moving.

Owners of the recalled models should stop riding their bikes immediately and contact Sheppard Cycles Australia on 1300 883 305 to arrange for a replacement skewer.

Sheppard Cycles is the distributor of the recalled brands. They were sold at dealers around Australia, at Big W stores and online between 1 Jul 2014 and 16 Nov 2023.

Owners of bicycles purchased at independent bicycle dealers are advised to contact Sheppard Cycles, which will send the replacement skewer to the independent dealer for installation.

Owners of bicycles purchased at Big W should also contact Sheppard Cycles, which will send the replacement skewer direct to the consumer.

A list of the recalled models and photographs of all the recalled bikes can be obtained here.
