Works begin on new Grattan Street bike lanes

Works have begun on the new east-west bike connection along Grattan Street in Carlton.

Separated lanes in both directions will connect from Bouverie to Rathdowne Streets.

At Bouverie Street the lanes will link to the new section of Gratton Street, which is being constructed by the Metro Tunnel Project and creating a key link from Parkville to Fitzroy.

The work, by City of Melbourne contractors, Citywide, began this week and is expected to be complete by the end of May.

Works will be staged to minimise impacts and pedestrian, car and bike access on Grattan Street will be maintained at all times.

Most works will be undertaken between 7am and 4pm, Monday to Friday. Occasional night works will occur between 8pm and 5am.

Road resurfacing works between Cardigan and Rathdowne streets will occur on some weekends to minimise disruption as crews occupy sections of the road. Traffic management will be in place to help keep people moving.

The project comprises 1.3km of mostly kerbside lanes behind protective kerbs and parking bays (650m in each direction) on Grattan Street from Bouverie Street to Rathdowne Street at the Carlton Gardens.

In other changes there will be hook-turn facilities at intersections, re-configured traffic lanes, new and relocated bus stops, and green surface treatment at conflict points.
