Bike route proposal for Yarra rowing sheds

The City of Melbourne is proposing to move the Main Yarra Trail bike route around the rear of the rowing sheds in the Alexander Gardens instead of the current riverfront alignment.

The move is one of a number of changes proposed for the precinct that the Council says will make the area more usable and accessible for walking, bike riding and recreation.

Under the draft plan the area in front of the of the bike sheds where the trail currently is located will be reserved for pedestrians.

There is already a road around the rear of the rowing sheds, but few riders ever use it. Under the proposed plan riders along the river upon reaching the sheds will be directed around the back, a direction which will seem counter-intuitive for most people on bikes.

Full details are here. You can fill in a survey, provide comments and make a submission here.

The concepts have been developed in the wake of the 2019 Domain Gardens Master Plan.

There will be a number of improvements to the Main Yarra Trail through the area, including a 20km/h speed limit on  Boathouse Drive and a safer crossing point for pedestrians and cyclists at the east end of Boathouse Drive which will enable a safe link between the MYT and the shared path through the Alexander Gardens up to St Kilda Road.

In addition the link between Boathouse Drive and the trail along the river to the east will slope more gently.

There will be new tree and garden bed planting, new and improved lighting, additional park furniture and new wayfinding and interpretative signage.
