Popular rail trail reaches inland NSW

Another section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail has opened for business, offering users a new stretch of magnificent off-road riding through northern New South Wales.

The new section spans 13.4km between Bentley and Casino, taking users on a scenic journey across seven bridges, a variety of rural landscapes and farmlands.

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is a 132km project starting in Murwillumbah, skirting the northern coast of NSW through the Byron Shire and jutting inland towards Casino.

The 24km Tweed Section of the trail was the first to open in March 2023 between Murwillumbah Railway Station and Crabbes Creek. It exceeded projections to prove wildly popular among bike riders and walkers, attracting more than 70,000 users in the first four months.

“Council is delighted to unveil the Casino to Bentley section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail, a testament to the collaborative efforts of our community and stakeholders,” says Richmond Valley Council Mayor Robert Mustow.

“This project not only provides a safe and accessible recreational space but also enhances the quality of life for residents and promotes tourism in our region.”

The project also includes a new parking facilities at both the Casino and Bentley ends of the trail section, and refurbishments to the Old Casino Station precinct.

Meanwhile, exciting progress continues to be made on other stretches of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail.

In August last year, the Byron Shire Council approved the development of a section through its territory, linking with the Tweed Section to the north.

The planned Lismore section west of Bentley will be the next section to open, and add a further 16km of trail for riding, walking and recreational use.
