Calling on council election volunteers to help create streets that people love
Bicycle Network is supporting a new Streets People Love statewide local government election campaign to contact and score candidates in up the upcoming October council elections – and we are calling for community support.
The campaign has been designed to encourage local government candidates to consider and commit to creating safe and pleasant streets for people to live, work, play and move in.
Community groups and individuals are encouraged to join the campaign and will be supported with candidate surveys and social media material via an upcoming streetspeoplelove.org website, which will be launched on 5 September.
Streets People Love spokesperson Jeremy Lawrence says: “We want streets that people love – safe and pleasant streets that enable people to live fulfilling lives while moving safely through their local communities.
“And we want to see 2024 council election candidates commit to delivering streets people love – starting by signing our pledge and taking our survey.”
The campaign needs volunteers across Victoria to get in touch with their local candidates, and we are calling for donations to help with campaign expenses such as printing flyers.
“We need support to reach out across the state so that voters can make an informed decision about who to vote for this October, and to hold the councillors accountable against their election pledges, says Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack.
“Duties will involve calling and emailing candidates to ask them to complete a survey, feeding results into the campaign website and assistance with social media and marketing in their LGAs.”
Ms McCormack says Bicycle Network is also seeking volunteers to provide office support in the lead-up to its events this year – the 30th celebration of United Energy Around the Bay on Sunday 6 October and the 40-year anniversary of The Great Vic Bike Ride from Saturday 23 November to Sunday 1 December.
“If you have any skills that you would like to contribute from spreadsheets to running errands, we would love to have you onboard,” Ms McCormack says.
