New Barron River bridge to get bike access

Riders in the Cairns region will finally have a safe way across the Barron River at Kuranda.

The critical $490 million Queensland Government project will replace the existing 256m bridge which does not include a dedicated lane for riders, only a narrow shoulder in one direction, which is shared by bikes and pedestrians.

The new bridge will include a separated pedestrian and cycling path, wider lanes and a turnaround facility on the Kennedy Highway.

The location is a major connection point to the Atherton Tablelands, as the primary means of crossing the river between Myola and Cairns.

The state government will contribute $245 million to the project, matching the federal government's commitment in April 2025.

The 62-year-old existing bridge has been the subject of several studies since 2015, with concerns raised over its structural integrity, stretched by an increase in heavy vehicle traffic.

Transport Minister Brent Mickelberg said the investment was a vital move for connectivity and accessibility in the Far North.

"This commitment cements full funding for the project and will allow detailed design and pre-construction works to begin," he said.

"This is generational infrastructure that will serve the Far North for decades to come."
