The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and Bicycle Network invite riders to register early for this year's TAC Great Vic Bike Ride and receive a free high-vis jersey.
The iconic cycling event will take place from 24–28 November this year and feature an updated format: five days of riding, camping and community along Victoria's Great Ocean Road, with the message 'Be Seen, Be Safe. Share the Road. Go Safely'.
Riders who enter before Tuesday 30 September will receive a free limited-edition high-visibility jersey.
The TAC Great Vic Bike Ride is part of the TAC's new three-year partnership with Bicycle Network to support active transport across the state.
TAC Senior Manager of Marketing, Sponsorships & Engagement, Angela Hann, said: "We're proud to continue our support of Bicycle Network to not only improve road safety outcomes but also encourage safe and inclusive ways for Victorians to move through their communities.
"The TAC Great Vic Bike Ride is the perfect setting for us to engage with Victoria's ever-growing bike riding community on road safety and remind motorists about their important role in keeping riders safe."
Bike riders are among Victoria's most vulnerable road users. In a collision with a vehicle, death or serious injury is a real possibility even at relatively low speeds.
Riders are encouraged to play their part by using lights, ensuring they are visible, following road rules and riding predictably. But their safety also relies on drivers making safe choices, such as putting phones away while driving and activating 'do not disturb' mode, performing head checks before turning, slowing down when approaching riders and always giving bikes at least 1 metre of space, or 1.5 metres in speed zones above 60km/h.
Bicycle Network CEO Alison McCormack said: "Bicycle Network is committed to working with the TAC to prevent road trauma and encourage safe, sustainable travel. The TAC Great Vic Bike Ride is one of the most uplifting weeks on the bike in Australia, and this partnership ensures safety is built into every pedal stroke."
Former professional cyclist and event ambassador, Simon Gerrans, added: "It's fantastic to see events like the Great Vic not only celebrate the joy of riding but also highlight the importance of road safety.
"The high-vis jersey is a great reminder that visibility saves lives, but riders' safety also depends on drivers slowing down, paying attention and giving people on bikes the space they need.
"I'm looking forward to joining thousands of riders on this iconic jersey."
