There will be more people riding more often to the Melbourne Cricket Ground in future years, according to the newly released draft Yarra Park Master Plan 2025.
Melburnians have been biking to, through and at the MCG for generations.
The path network through the park links several of the city's key bike corridors, and on days of big sporting events and concerts, bike parking areas in Yarra Park around the MCG are often embarrassingly overflowing.
And let us not forget that in earlier times there was a track around the oval on which bike races were conducted to keep football crowds excited.
The strategy says there will be upgrades to pathways throughout the park, ensuring that the improvements respect the heritage significance of the existing path network and adjacent significant trees, while smoother surfaces are introduced.
Contrasting surface treatments will be investigated to separate pedestrians from cyclists.
There is even the suggestion of provision of parking and charging facilities for e-bikes.
A formal public consultation was held in 2023, with the current process undertaken as part of the required Planning Minister approval.
