Better crossings for inner west
With a flood of riders expected to use the Veloway between Footscray and central Melbourne after it opens soon, two new raised street crossings are being installed to make it easier and safer to connect to the key corridor.

The City of Maribyrnong, with support from the West Gate Tunnel Project and the Department of Transport and Planning, is providing new shared path crossings at Maribyrnong Street adjacent to Shepherd Bridge, and at the Hyde Street and Harris Street corner.

Most riders who use the Footscray Road Trail and Shepherd Bridge, and link to the Maribyrnong River Trail at Maribyrnong Street, will be familiar with the current awkward crossing.

With the soon-to-be-open continuation of the trail along the Maribyrnong downstream to the tunnel entry/exit and the new Whitehall Street overpass at Harris Street, there will be riders flowing in both directions at this location as riders link to Shepherd Bridge and the Veloway.

Works are underway now and will continue into December.

A short, temporary detour will be in place while works are underway, which will redirect riders on a temporary path around the roadworks. Signage will be present and traffic management in place during works hours, which will include Saturday mornings.

The other location will be at the top of Harris Street at the Yarraville Gardens where the new Harris Street route joins the network along Hyde Street. This crossing will allow riders from beyond Hyde and Nicholson streets in Seddon and Yarraville to access Harris Street towards the city as well as the Hyde Street shared path towards Spotswood and Williamstown.

While works are underway, Hyde Street will be periodically closed between Princess and Berry streets. Signage will be present and traffic management in place.

Riders on Hyde Street should note that as Hyde Street will be closed at times, the Somerville Road/Whitehall Street shared path connection is an alternative route.
