Works begin on Charlestown to Whitebridge link
Construction has begun on a new active transport route connecting Lake Macquarie suburbs Charlestown and Whitebridge with the Fernleigh Track.

Stage 1, Section 1 of the Charlestown to Whitebridge Transport Infrastructure Corridor Upgrade involves building a shared path and elevated boardwalk and bridge over Flaggy Creek, including about 175 metres of shared path and boardwalk between Milson and Kaleen streets.

Section 2 will see road rehabilitation and drainage along Kaleen Street and construction of a shared path between Guna and Wakal streets.

These two stages are jointly funded by Transport for NSW (via the Get Active NSW program) and Lake Macquarie City Council.

Member for Charlestown, Jodie Harrison, said the project was the beginning of an exciting development for the region.

"These routes are more than just pathways – they're vital infrastructure promoting physical and mental wellbeing, reducing pollution, easing traffic congestion and strengthening local economies," she said.

"By providing safe, convenient ways for people to move, exercise and connect with their community, we're enhancing the quality of life for residents throughout our city."

Future works, subject to funding, include:

  • Stage 1, Section 3: intersection improvements, including creating a safe, raised cyclist/pedestrian crossing from Kaleen Street to Guna Street.
  • Stage 1, Section 4: constructing a shared path between Milson and Frederick streets.
  • Stage 1, Section 5: replacing the existing narrow footpath on Kaleen Street east with a shared path and streetscape works between Guna Street and Waran Road.
  • Stage 2, Section 1: constructing a 1.2-kilometre shared path along Waran Road.
  • Stage 2, Section 2: constructing a new shared path along Frederick Street, extending the shared path from Pacific Highway to Milson Street and providing a key active transport connection to Charlestown Public School.
The complete route will connect four schools, the Charlestown economic centre, Charlestown swim centre, sporting fields and more.
