Mt Nelson plan drops speed limits

The City of Hobart has released a draft plan with 17 recommendations to improve walking and riding conditions in Mount Nelson, including a 40 km suburb-wide speed limit and better trail connections.

The plan focuses on making it easier for students at the primary school and Hobart College to walk and ride to school.

As well as the lower speed limit to make local roads more comfortable for people to ride on, the plan specifically identifies existing trails for improvement and potential trails:

  • Upper Rialannah Track – construct switchbacks from Lambert Rivulet Track to Rialannah Fire Trail to provide a connection between Mount Nelson and Sandy Bay.
  • Cartwright Reserve to Porter Hill – a new trail to connect Mount Nelson to Channel Highway in Taroona.
  • College Road to Olinda Grove – work with the University of Tasmania to build a new trail to connect Sandy Bay to Mount Nelson as an alternative to Proctors Road.
  • Mount Nelson Store to Hobart College – Realign and improve existing trails to give students a clear alternative route to Olinda Grove.

Other recommendations in the plan include new footpaths, improvements to intersection crossings and more dedicated space for people walking and riding along Nelson Road between the oval and Signal Station.

The plan is open for comments until 11 January 2026 via https://yoursay.hobartcity.com.au/local-area-mobility-plan-mount-nelson
