Rail Trails looking for Tassie rep

Rail Trails Australis is looking for a volunteer to help it celebrate the benefits of rail trails in the Apple Isle and serve as its Tasmanian representative.

RTA is the peak body for all the groups that help get rail trails up and running and look after them once established.

The role would be responsible for monitoring local media, supporting rail trail organisations and updating a database of rail trail organisations. If you’re interested, contact Alan Abrahams at admin@railtrails.org.au.

The Tasmanian Parliament’s Public Works Committee is inquiring into the proposed road from the Tasman Highway through Macquarie Point to the Hobart Port, which will affect riders using the Intercity Cycleway.

The inquiry is open for submissions, with the deadline Monday 2 February and an in-person hearing to be held on Thursday 12 February. If you’d like to see the plans for the road to make a submission email tasoffice@bicyclenetwork.com.au and we’ll forward them to you.

Council flags Augusta Rd cycleway work

A Hobart Council workshop in mid January has flagged the start of consultation for a cycleway down Augusta Road, connecting with Elizabeth Street, as part of a streetscape upgrade.

The proposed cycleway has been included in several endorsed plans and strategies over the past decade, including the Northern Suburbs Local Area Mobility Plan, North Hobart Neighbourhood Plan and the Hobart Transport Strategy.

The council plans to engage with key stakeholders such as Calvary Hospital while it works on modelling, design and funding in the first half of this year.

Still searching for a tandem

Anne was born in The Netherlands and has always ridden a bicycle but in the last few years her osteoarthritis has stopped her and she really misses the joy of getting around on her bike.

Anne turns 85 this year and a fit relative has promised to ride her around Hobart on a tandem bike during their Easter visit if she can find one.

If you have a tandem bicycle you are willing to lend Anne for 5 days during easter 2026 please send us a message at tasoffice@bicyclenetwork.com.au.

The one trail Anne is really looking forward to riding on is the Pipeline Track’s new extension, so a bike suitable for gravel trails would be ideal.
