Another step forward for Central Queensland's BBIRT

Bit by bit, the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail is evolving, with the latest development being the installation of steel bridge decks over the existing timber trusses.

The two newly decked and railed bridges near the township of Many Peaks have been completed and reopened to trail users, eliminating the need for riders to drop into often-flooded gullies and creating a more continuous riding experience.

The bridge works were funded by the Queensland Government and secured through the persistent toil of the volunteer-run BBIRT committee.

When eventually complete, the BBIRT will stretch 270 kilometres, making it Australia's longest rail trail.

More adventurous riders have even added two other rail trails to the mix - the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, part of the Kilkivan to Kingaroy Rail Trail and some back roads between Kilkivan and Gayndah to link up with the BBIRT. A mega 500+ kilometre rail trail epic, this ride is known as 'The Great Queensland Rail Trail Adventure'.

Highlights of the BBIRT include a section through Dawes Range with six tunnels, sweeping mountain views, and national parks on the doorstep. To the south, the Mundubbera to Mt Debateable section features heritage bridges, stunning Burnett River scenery and canoeing. Closer to Gladstone, the highlight of the Four-Mile Scrub to Boynedale Bush Camp section includes a ride along the shores of Lake Awoonga.

The BBIRT isn't your typical smooth, sealed rail trail; it’s more a back-to-basics adventure route that takes riders past fascinating railway engineering and spectacular Queensland landscapes. It's ideal territory for MTB and gravel bike riders who like their adventures with a bit of grit.

Camping is available at Mt Debateable, Barrimoon, Golembil and Builyan (book via Hipcamp), and there are pubs and accommodation in the many towns along the route.
