One of southern Tasmania’s favourite rides has joined our library of self-guided routes: the 27 km Cygnet Wattle Grove Loop.
The ride is roughly the course followed by the annual Hell of the South race in early November, which has recently expanded into the Cygnet Cycling Festival allowing you to ride the course without having to compete.
Its popularity stems from the gorgeous scenery as well as the challenging climb out of Cygnet before gliding downhill to an easier-going loop around the coast.
This route is best tackled by confident riders with strong legs and e-bike riders.
Gravel roads for about one-third of the route also means wider tyres are needed and being prepared for potentially bumpy conditions. The route follows mostly quieter country roads but they still have 100 km/h speed limits and no sealed shoulders.
What to expect
The ride starts in the village of Cygnet which has an eclectic collection of shops and galleries well worth a thorough browse before or after your ride. It’s also got all you need to stock up on snacks and drinks before you head off as there isn’t anywhere to stop along the way.
Heading west on Golden Valley Road gives you clear views of rolling rural landscapes and glimpses of the Huon River.
This road climbs up to 244 m and quickly descends on the other side to Wattle Grove and the Cygnet Coastal Road, which soon becomes gravel.
If you’re riding on a Sunday or Monday you could stop in at Ripples Art Gallery in Petcheys Bay to check out the sculptures, furniture and paintings.
Other potential stops help you take in views of the river, such as Copper Alley Bay or Brabazon Point.
Back in Cygnet there are multiple cafes and two pubs to choose from for coffee or a meal.
