If you haven’t heard by now – we’re going to New Zealand! That’s right, our search for great bike riding escapes has led us across the ditch in 2020 for the Great Kiwi Escape.
To help you get your head around exactly how great the Great Kiwi Escape will be, we’ve put together a quick highlight reel, in no particular order!
Queenstown
For those who haven’t been, Queenstown truly is a place like no other. Labelled ‘the adventure capital of the country’, the energy created by a vibrant township surrounded by unbelievable mountains, lakes and valleys is intoxicating – making it the perfect place to spend the first two nights of our adventure.
But to pigeonhole Queenstown as an adrenalin-junkie’s playground is not doing justice to the emerging café and dining scene held up by great local produce and incredible cool-climate wines.
If you think you’re dreaming as we venture out of the city each day, that’s probably because the make-believe worlds of Narnia and Lord of the Rings have been created using this stunning backdrop.
Milford Sound
Milford Sound would have to be one of the most famous natural wonders off the South Island. If you haven’t seen this fiord on a postcard, you’ve certainly seen it on an Instagram or Facebook post from a visiting friend or family member. It’s simply too beautiful not to share!
We know that sometimes you need to jump of the bike to appreciate something so grand, which is why we’ve scheduled a rest day to take in this magnificent World Heritage site.
The whole crew will cruise the still blue waters together by ship so that we can take in 360-degree views of towering peaks and surging waterfalls.
If this looks like something out of Jurassic Park to you, that’s because it is!
Lake Tekapo
If there are any keen photographers amongst us, they won’t be able to hide their excitement once we reach Lake Tekapo. Dazzling turquoise water, soaring snow-peaked mountains, rolling lavender fields, historical stone churches and majestic natural light displays once the sun goes down… seriously, you’ll need extra storage for photos!
Words can’t do this highlight justice, and neither will your photos. The true experience is reserved for your eyes in that moment.
Christchurch
After all the natural beauty you can handle, we’re finishing the trip in New Zealand’s third largest city. But don’t expect the hustle and bustle of ‘the Big Smoke’, Christchurch offers an awesome combination of old-English charm filled with modern comforts in shopping, dining and entertainment, with a hidden surprise around every corner.
The perfect place for us to reminisce on an unforgettable eight-day adventure in the South Island!
The support
Undoubtedly one of the highlights of a premium bike riding holiday should be the support. We know as well as anyone that people love the freedom of exploring a new region by bike, but when you’re this far from home, you also want to feel supported.
The Great Kiwi Escape is completely designed around support, with Bicycle Network providing on route support for each riding leg, hydration and nutrition stops along the way, additional activities to help fill the itinerary, optional transport services for when you don’t feel like pedaling and mechanical support at every stop along the way.
If all the pictures of beautiful mountains has your legs shaking already, don’t worry, we won’t be riding up them – this isn’t Peaks Challenge New Zealand!

The crew
One of our favourite things about running a more intimate event like the Great Kiwi Escape is the special bond built between the entire crew. While we love getting to know people on the Great Vic, remembering 5,000 names and faces simply isn’t possible in a week!
With a much smaller crew crossing the ditch together, our team cannot wait to get out there, meet new people, help each other out and share some unforgettable experiences together with our riders along the way. After all, isn’t that what bike riding is all about?
