Torquay to Geelong link on the horizon

Work will soon be underway to investigate a future bike link from Torquay to Geelong.

The path would likely be off-road, and mostly along the Horseshoe Bend Road alignment, and importantly would avoid the heavy traffic buzz off the current on road route along the Surf Coast Highway.

Surf Coast Shire and the City of Great Geelong have each received $30,000 funding under the annual Transport Accident Commission’s (TAC) Local Government Grant Program towards and options analysis of the most attractive and economical way to connect the two centres.

Running parallel to the busy highway, the Horseshoe Bend Road corridor is largely flat except for the dip at the Thompson Creek crossing.

It would link from Torquay North, where the council has already planned bike facilities, through to growing Armstrong Creek, and then connect to Marshall Station.

The route passes through the new growth suburbs being planned south of Geelong and would connect thousands of new residents to public transport, schools community facilities and shopping, and the beach not more than half an hour’s ride away.

The route would also connect to other safe bike routes along the Armstrong Creek and rail Corridor and along Barwon Heads Road

The grants are part of a batch of 40 of active transport safety initiatives to Victorian municipalities worth $2M in this round.

Transport Accident Commission CEO Tracey Slatter said: “Protecting vulnerable road users is a key part of improving road safety in Victoria.
