Two e-bike models have been recalled for battery issues that can cause fires.
Santa Cruz Bicycles has recalled its Santa Cruz Heckler 9 e-bike with interchangeable 720W lithium-ion batteries.
These batteries may short-circuit and cause a fire. There is a risk of burn injuries and damage to property if the battery catches fire.
Riders are advised to immediately stop using the e-bike and disconnect the battery from the bike and the charger. They should then check if the battery is affected by following the instructions on the Santa Cruz Bicycles recall page.
Santa Cruz Bicycles has received four reports of fires, including some property damage. No injuries have been reported so far.
The model can be identified by the moniker 'SANTA CRUZ' printed on the sides of the downtube along with 'Heckler' printed on the top tube and on the inside of the left chainstay. It was for sale in Australia between 1 December 2021 and 30 April 2025.
If affected, riders can register to receive a replacement battery and should remove the downtube cover before disposing of the battery in accordance with local requirements (not in household waste).
If not affected, they can continue to use their e-bike. Santa Cruz Bicycles or its dealers can be contacted for more assistance.
