Riders who take the Eltham-Yarra Glen Road should be aware that the connection into Yarra Glen will be closed later this month for two weeks.
While there are detours, they are lengthy and on busy roads and unsuitable for riders. Because of the layout of roads in the area, there are no viable options for alternative routes.
Transport Victoria is strengthening the Maroondah Aqueduct bridge on Eltham-Yarra Glen Road, just west of Yarra Glen.
This will involves replacing the old bridge deck.
The bridge works will close the road between Mt Wise Road and Steels Creek Road from 8pm Sunday 21 September to 10pm Sunday 5 October 2025.
The bridge will remain closed during the AFL Grand Final long weekend (26–28 September).
Once the bridge has reopened, final works including road resurfacing, barrier installation and signage works will be completed in October.
There will be speed reductions in place and temporary single lane closures to complete these final works.
If you had planned to take this route by car to go riding at another location, a signed detour will be in place through Warrandyte and Lilydale: detour via Eltham-Yarra Glen Road, Kangaroo Ground-Warrandyte Road, Yarra Street, Ringwood-Warrandyte Road, Croydon Road, Wonga Road, Warranwood Road, Plymouth Road, Yarra Road, Maroondah Highway and the Melba Highway.
An alternative detour is available through Kinglake and Dixons Creek using Heidelberg-Kinglake Road, Healesville-Kinglake Road and Melba Highway.
