SWAG family packs out Bike Week talk

Around 300 people packed the University of Tasmania in Sandy Bay during Bike Week to hear from the SWAG Family about their travels around the world with three young children.

Andrew and Nicola Hughes set up the stage with the tents and bikes that were used in their trip – not the triplet tandem though, that’s sitting in an alleyway somewhere in Punta Arenas!

They then ran through key questions that they asked themselves on the journey with short video clips and stories to illustrate the answer, like “Does it have to be hard?” and “Who’s going to help us now?”.

Questions from the floor finished off the afternoon with many in the audience heading to the stage to check out their gear. The presentation will be last podcast they put out – keep an eye out for it on Spotify, Apple or Google.

Thanks to the University for providing the venue and Hobart Bike Kitchen and Streets People Love for their foyer stalls.

Bike Week rides

Bike Week was kicked off by two regular rides: the Kunanyi Challenge hill climb trial and the Tweed ride in Launceston. Both rides were blessed with great weather and healthy turnouts.

The Tamar Bicycle Users Group and Bicycle Network volunteers ran several other free social rides during the week (note, some of these were rescheduled if RSVPs were low) and Eudaimonia Cycling Tours opened up their weekly paid rides for newcomers try out.

It was encouraging to see other groups getting onboard Bike Week with Lions Club organising a ride along the North-East Rail Trail and Kidsafe Tasmania launching its campaign to get more children wearing helmets on their bikes and scooters.

A couple of our members also took the opportunity to run a week of rides for interstate friends across north-west Tasmania, enjoying the Coastal Pathway and Wild Mersey trails – true Bike Week spirit!
