The Federal Government will extend its national active travel infrastructure program for the next 10 years, totalling $500 million.
Announced in the 2026–27 Federal Budget, the initiative will build on the success of the initial program, rolled out during the Albanese Government’s first term.
The program delivered multiple, mainly modestly scoped bike and walking connections to many corners of the country.
The projects have proved popular with local communities and Australia’s bike organisations encouraged the government to keep the project rolling.
Among the projects previously funded are $2.9 million towards the construction of the Wilson Street west cycleway in Sydney, and $4.1 million towards the Cottesloe Marine Parade upgrade in Western Australia.

Many cities and towns across Australia, especially those that have existing bike plans and transport strategies, should have well developed concepts for active transport developments that could become submissions for funding.
The aim of the program is to “encourage an increase in active transport through the upgrade of existing and construction of new bicycle and walking pathways across Australia".
The program also supports the Australian Government’s commitment to reducing transport emissions and supporting active and liveable communities.
