Main Yarra Trail diversion in Kew

Preparations for major construction activities along the Eastern Freeway require the relocation of the Main Yarra Trail in Kew for an extended period.

A new site compound will temporarily occupy an area of land between the freeway, the Guide Dogs HQ and the Yarra.

The location, shown in the photograph above, is just east of where the trail starts at the Chandler Highway.

The compound will be located across the existing path and fenced off.

The trail will remain open (although there may be brief stoppages at times) via a new section of path that will travel around the compound closer to the river, to the left of the photograph.

The works at the Chandler Highway will provide for a new dedicated busway along the freeway as well as the new bike route that runs directly along the freeway towards the city, taking bikes across a new bridge over the Yarra being built as part of the project.

The compound will be used to store equipment and materials for the new bike route.

Riders will notice that some vegetation will be removed, later to be replaced with two trees planted for every one removed. Tress will be inspected for wildlife and animals safely relocated under the supervision of an ecologist.

Day works take place between 7am and 7pm from Monday to Friday and between 7am and 3pm Saturdays, while night works are between 7pm and 7am from Monday to Friday.
