The Quarry Park trails, skills park and pump track, just up from the Maribyrnong River in Footscray, are due to open on Saturday 12 October.
The family-focused facility will be unique in Melbourne, giving young people and beginner riders a modest hill and track network to get the muscles and lungs burning and the excitement levels up in a forgiving environment.
The park is on the site of the old Footscray tip on the hill behind Footscray Secondary College. When the tip had to be re-capped due to methane leaks, community leaders seized the opportunity to utilise the earthworks to assist with the building of BMX and MTB trails.
The pump track and the skills park are at the base of the hill. There is a relatively comfortable ascending trail and three trails down from the top, including a beginners trails and a technical trail and jumps trail for intermediate level riders.
There will be extensive landscaping and tree planting between trails and a picnic area, seating and drinking fountains.
For local people this will be a tremendous resource for getting kids physically active and gaining bike skills.
Because the park is not far from the Maribyrnong River Trail, people from further away will have ready access.
The official opening is from 11am to 1pm. After that activities will continue until 4pm, hosted by local group Bike West. The opening event will be located at the top, north-west corner of the site.
