Elizabeth Street South construction starts

Work on the new layout for the southern end of Elizabeth Street in the CBD will get rolling this week.

In the new vision for the street, traffic will be restricted, access and connections improved for tram travellers, and more space will be available for those on foot.

The works will see the southbound traffic lane closed and the roadway on the eastern side of Elizabeth Street, between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane, turned into a new pedestrian zone.

The transformation of this space will increase the pedestrian area by 400 square metres.

Works will start with street furniture to be removed to make way for construction and fences will be installed on the eastern side of Elizabeth Street.

Construction activity will continue through to May. The project was delayed due to COVID.

Eventually the transformation will move further north along the street, where major improvements to bike access will be made.
