Brisbane trials bike speed awareness monitors

Brisbane City Council has installed 2 speed awareness monitors along the popular Kangaroo Point Bikeway to encourage users to travel at safe speeds.

These new Bicycle Awareness Monitors work much like the well-known ‘smiling’ car speed awareness monitors, by measuring the speed of bikes and micromobility devices such as e-scooters. The monitors will alert users travelling over 15 km/h with a ‘slow down’ message.

Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has said the monitors are intended to promote safe travel along the busy Kangaroo Point Bikeway.

“Brisbane is an incredible city to walk and ride around, but it’s important everyone uses our shared paths considerately, and safely and travelling at the correct speed is an important part of this,” Cr Schrinner said.

The Kangaroo Point Bikeway runs along the southern side of the Brisbane River, beginning at Ferrymans Bridge in the east and continuing for 4 km along the river before terminating at the Queensland Maritime Museum. The bikeway accommodates roughly 3000 users each day.

The 2 new signs are located at the Kangaroo Point Cliff stairs and near the Riverlife Adventure Centre along the shared Kangaroo Point Cliffs path.
