More Open Streets across schools in Moreland

Building on the successes of last year, Bicycle Network is very happy to announce we have renewed our partnership with Moreland City Council. We will deliver Bicycle Network’s Open Streets trials as part of Moreland City 2022 Ride & Stride program at three new schools in terms 3 and 4 this year.

In 2021 Bicycle Network partnered with Moreland City Council as part of their Ride and Stride program in schools across Moreland.

Ride and Stride is a behaviour change initiative designed to get children active on their journeys to school, and create a safer, more sustainable transport network in Moreland.

Our partnership saw Bicycle Network work with MCC to deliver Bicycle Network’s Open Streets trials at Brunswick East Primary School and Coburg North Primary School.

Open Streets creates safe spaces for children and families at drop off and pick up time by limiting car traffic around school gates on one day per week for three weeks. By cutting school gate congestion it addresses one of the main concerns that stops parents/carers letting their children walk or ride to school and aims to change the role of streets in our neighbourhoods. Open Streets helps build safer, more connected, happier and healthier communities.

The 2021 Open Streets days were an Australian first but mirror similar programs overseas which promote use of public streets for recreation, mobility, and leisure-time activities.

The communities of BEPS and CNPS took to Open Streets like ducks to water, and engagement with the program from both parents and students shows an appetite for people-oriented streets.

Active travel at CNPS was 20% higher than on a typical day, while 95% of all students at BEPS students travelled actively to school on the last day of the trial.

Starting this Friday 26th August 2022, we will be launching our Open Streets trials at Moreland Primary School, Coburg, with further trials planned for Brunswick North West Primary School and St Oliver Plunkett Primary School in term 4.

These schools have been part of the Ride and Stride program in 2022 and we are excited to get out into these communities to promote active travel to school.
