Water main to disrupt Albion Street

Riders on the popular east-west Albion Street connection through Melbourne's north will encounter construction works for a new water main next month.

Greater Western Water is currently developing the new main through Essendon and Pascoe Vale, with construction starting in Albion Street early November.

The Albion Street bike route connects from Essendon shopping centre in the west right across to the Merri Creek Trail in East Brunswick.

Fortunately contractors have planned to works so that disruption to riders will be minimal.

The bike lane on the southern side of Albion Street, between McPherson Street and Pascoe Vale Road in Essendon, will be closed as construction progressively moves along the street.

Traffic management will facilitate two-way traffic on the northern side of Albion Street and this may result in delays.

Traffic management will be in place from 7am to 6pm on Monday to Friday, with works on weekends only if required.

The bike lane on the southern side of Albion Street will remain closed in short sections in the evenings and on weekends.

Speed limits will be reduced to 40km per hour in and around the construction area as it moves along Albion Street from the corner of McPherson Street to the corner of Pascoe Vale Road.

There will also be short-term closures of the bike lane at the intersection of Albion Street with Fitzgerald Road during the construction program.

The water main renewal project will then move onto Pascoe Vale Road in early 2023.
