North Melbourne night closures

Victoria Street in North Melbourne will be closed to east-bound traffic overnight for up to a month.

Riders will have to detour after 7pm until 6am between Chetwynd and O’Connell Streets, while work is undertaken to renew a 140-year-old water main.

The route will re-open outside of construction hours, which are Sunday evenings until Thursday morning.

Works will get underway Sunday, 20 November and are expected to last for four weeks.

Bikes will detour northbound and southbound via Chetwynd Street, ending at Elizabeth Street, with traffic management in the area to assist.

For riders the northbound detour via Chetwynd and Queensberry to Elizabeth will likely be more convenient.

Riders should note that all traffic will be diverted and also be alert to increased truck traffic if you are riding westbound on Victoria Street..

The works are being undertaken by Greater Western Water and contractors Jaydo Construction.

This is the first stage of night works on the northern side of Victoria Street.

Until early 2023 works will progress in stages along Victoria Street to Nicholson Street.

Riders will continue to be notified about lane closures and detours as these works progress.

These works are upgrading 3.5km of aging water mains that have been in service for 140 years. Construction is scheduled to be completed by mid to late 2023.
