A new tram electricity substation will be constructed adjacent to the Royal Park shared path along Flemington Road during the next 12 months.
Temporary closures of paths and bike lanes will occur from time to time during the project.
The first stage starts on Monday 14 November with services installation and then site establishment and will continue through to 22 December.
Work will include:
- Set up the site (including fencing) at Royal Park Tram Reserve entrance, Flemington Road Parkville.
- Install services such as gas, water communications, power, and overhead poles to the substation.
- Prepare for demolition works.
During this stage, there may be temporary footpath closures along Flemington Road around the works with local detours and traffic management in place.

Most of the work will occur 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 3pm, Saturday.
The Department of Transport and Yarra Trams are revitalising Melbourne’s tram network to meet the city’s future transport needs and increased demands on the tram network and this requires more powerful and more robust electricity supply.
Further stages include demolition of the old tram drivers' amenity shed during January 2023.
Construction of the new substation will begin next February and continue through to September. There will be changes to tram services during this time as well as more extensive interruptions to bike traffic due to construction activities.
Testing and commissioning of the new facility will be undertaken in October and November 2023.
