The next stage of the major project to fit St Kilda Road with separated bike lanes—Stage Two—gets rolling next week with Stage One now almost finished and due to open before the end of the month.
The Stage One lanes are looking great, but finishing touches such as signs, line marking and green paint are yet to be completed.
The Stage Two works between Toorak Road and Union Street will likely start next week, depending on weather, and continue into next year.
Works will involve the temporary closure of sections of the outer traffic lanes in each direction on St Kilda Road between Toorak Road and Union Street.
There will be temporary bike lanes, some side road closures, reduced speed limits, reduced parking and restricted access to some loading zones during the works.

Activities will involve:
- set up of work areas,
- installation of safety fencing, barriers, bollards and site offices
- removal of the old road surface,
- installation of kerb separators, and
- laying of new asphalt installation new line marking and surface treatments.
Most works will take place between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm, Saturdays. Some works may need to happen at night to minimise traffic impacts.
The area around the new Anzac underground station are not part of these works as they are being undertaken by the Metro Tunnel project. One section in the southbound lane in this precinct has already been constructed.
There are some challenges for the designers in the north-bound lanes in Stage Two as there are multiple driveways along the kerb where there could be conflict between bikes in the separated bike lanes and drivers entering and leaving the properties.
Drivers entering and leaving properties are required to give way but don’t always do so.
To mitigate these risks the designers are taking considerable care with sightlines, setting back car parking spaces well clear of driveways to ensure good vision.
